Hard Bargain Cottage

The Hard Bargain Association developed this cottage in Franklin, Tennessee, and the design is kept simple. The whole front is a raised porch under a broad roof, reached by a center stair with railings on both sides.

Blue lap siding wraps the body of the house, with white trim and a plain gable on the side. The elevations and plan show how little is needed: a front porch, a compact set of rooms behind it, and a stair that makes the short walk from the street feel like an arrival. The project was published in Southern Living.
